There is something deeply moving about seeing a piece of your own culture travel across the country on someone else’s shoulders. That is exactly what happened this September, when Air India Express unveiled new uniforms for its cabin crew and frontline staff, and Assam’s cherished Gamosa found a proud place in the design. For many people from the Northeast, this small but meaningful gesture felt like finally being seen on a national stage.

The Tata Group owned airline rolled out its new uniforms from September 1, covering cabin crew, airport services, aviation security and flight operations teams. The idea behind the redesign is simple yet touching; instead of choosing a generic corporate look, the airline decided to borrow inspiration from five different Indian states.

Assam’s Gamosa sits alongside Tamil Nadu’s Kanjeevaram, Himachal Pradesh’s Pattu, Gujarat’s Patola and Madhya Pradesh’s Bagh. Each of these textiles carries generations of stories, and Air India Express hoped to carry a piece of that emotion into everyday airline life.

The uniforms are built around the airline’s signature Xpress Blue shade, gently lifted with touches of Xpress Orange, giving the whole collection a warm yet professional feel.

Why The Assam Gamosa Connection Feels So Special

For most Assamese households, the Gamosa is not just fabric; it is respect, love, tradition and identity, folded into a simple woven cloth. It appears during Bihu celebrations, at weddings, in prayers and in everyday gestures of honour.

So when news spread about the Assam Gamosa inspired Air India Express uniform, many people from the region felt an emotional connection almost instantly. It is a reminder that even the smallest cultural symbols deserve national recognition, and for once, Assam’s craft was placed beside some of India’s most celebrated textile traditions. This sense of pride is genuine, and it deserves to be celebrated with an open heart.

A Few Honest Concerns Beneath the Celebration

At the same time, not everyone is fully convinced, and that honesty matters too. Some employees and cultural observers gently question whether the Gamosa’s essence has truly been captured, or whether it has simply been reduced to a subtle design accent.

Traditions like the Gamosa carry emotional weight that cannot always be reflected through fabric choice alone. Critics feel that true respect for heritage requires deeper storytelling, not just visual inspiration borrowed for branding purposes.

There is also a practical worry among staff. With over 5,200 employees receiving new uniforms out of a workforce of nearly 8,000, adjustments, fitting issues and uneven rollout timelines are natural concerns during such a large transition.

These feelings are valid, and acknowledging them does not take away from the positive intent behind the initiative; it simply keeps the conversation honest.

The People Behind This Meaningful Redesign

Gamosa Finally Gets the Spotlight It Deserves (Representational image)

What makes this uniform story even more heartfelt is who designed it. Pooja Krishnan, an in-house designer at Air India Express, led the look for female cabin crew, airport services, aviation security and flight operations staff.

Her deep understanding of frontline realities brought a personal, caring touch to the process. The men’s cabin crew uniform, meanwhile, was shaped in collaboration with Trent Limited, ensuring both comfort and elegance.

The fabric selected, banana crepe, was chosen thoughtfully for its breathability and durability, considering how many hours these employees spend standing, walking and serving passengers with a smile.

Contemporary silhouettes inspired by the traditional kurti, paired with tailored jackets, scarves and pocket squares, bring together comfort and cultural charm in a way that feels both modern and rooted.

What The Airline Hopes This Moment Represents

Sharing the launch, Air India Express described it poignantly, saying some stories are written, some are woven and some take to the skies. It is a beautiful sentiment, one that reflects how deeply culture can be woven into something as simple as a uniform.

Sunil Suresh, head of marketing at Air India Group, shared that frontline staff shape some of the most memorable moments for every traveller. He expressed hope that the new uniforms reflect their warmth, dedication and professionalism, while staying true to India’s cultural roots.

Whether seen as heartfelt tribute or as a marketing driven gesture, the emotional core of this initiative cannot be ignored.

A Story Still Being Woven

With over 100 aircraft and more than 500 daily flights, Air India Express carries not just passengers, but now, quietly, pieces of India’s heritage too. The Assam Gamosa inspired Air India Express uniform may not be perfect in everyone’s eyes, but it opens a meaningful conversation about representation, pride and cultural respect.

Perhaps what matters most is not whether the design is flawless, but that Assam’s Gamosa found its place in a story larger than itself, one thread, one journey and one heartfelt moment at a time.
