FASTag Rules Changed: NHAI Scraps KYV Hassles Starting February 1

No More KYV Hassles Starting February 1

Whether it’s the morning office rush, a long trip with family, or hitting the highway for urgent work, FASTag is a necessity for every driver today. However, the hassle of calls, messages, and repeated document requests following its activation has been a source of concern for many.

To resolve this confusion, a major decision regarding the KYV Rule Change has been made. This decision offers relief while simultaneously bringing more discipline to the system.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced that starting February 1, 2026, the KYV (Know Your Vehicle) process will be discontinued at the time of issuing FASTags for new cars, jeeps, and vans. From that moment, it will no longer be a necessity.

Why was the change in KYV rules necessary?

NHAI Alerts Drivers: Major FASTag Rule Changes

Until now, many vehicle owners faced disruptions due to KYV verification even after receiving and activating their FASTag. Despite having a valid RC and proper documents, issues at toll plazas were common. The government believes that this caused unnecessary stress for everyday road users.

According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, this change is a step toward making the whole system more reliable and user-friendly.

Who will get the most relief?

For car owners already using it, this news is nothing short of a major relief. KYV will no longer be an everyday requirement for existing FASTags. Unless a specific complaint arises, vehicle owners will not have to undergo any additional procedures.

However, if complaints regarding misuse of it, loose tags, or fraudulent issuance surface, KYV may become mandatory. In short: relief for honest users, but strictness for those who misuse the system.

How will FASTag activation work now?

Big Update: Your FASTag Experience Just Got Easier

Under the new rules, vehicle information will be verified through the VAHAN database before the FASTag is activated. The old system of post-activation checks has been scrapped.

In cases where vehicle details are not available in VAHAN, banks will perform verification using the Registration Certificate (RC). The entire responsibility will lie with the banks, ensuring no pressure is placed on the customers. FASTags purchased online will also be activated only after a thorough verification process.

Increased Responsibility Along with Relief

While this decision will make highway travel easier and reduce FASTag-related complaints, it increases the accountability of banks and issuing agencies. They will have to bear the consequences of any errors or incorrect activations.

Conclusion

The KYV Rule Change brings relief to the general public, but it also sends a clear signal that there is no room for negligence in the system. Moving forward, this change is expected to make the whole experience smoother, more reliable, and stress-free.
