PM Modi Inaugurates Moran Emergency Landing Facility: A Major Boost to National Security

Sometimes, only a few minutes’ notice is given when the nation faces a security threat or a sudden natural disaster. Have you ever wondered how crucial those few minutes could be? Moran Emergency Landing Facility, located in Assam’s Dibrugarh district, India, is a new safeguard that could become a lifeline in times of such a threat or crisis.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated the first Emergency Landing Facility in Northeast India on the Moran Bypass today. Arriving aboard an Indian Air Force C-130J aircraft, the Prime Minister’s landing itself symbolised the strategic importance of the occasion.

This specially reinforced 4.2-kilometre stretch of highway is now capable of functioning as a runway for fighter jets and large transport aircraft during emergencies.

The inauguration witnessed an impressive aerial display by the Indian Air Force. Sukhoi Su-30MKI and Dassault Rafale fighter jets took off from the newly developed airstrip, demonstrating operational readiness.

HAL Dhruv helicopters carried out commando drop drills and simulated relief operations, underlining the facility’s role in both defense and humanitarian missions. Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma and Air Chief Marshal A P Singh were present during the event.

Why This Emergency Landing Facility Matters

Northeast India holds immense strategic importance due to its geography, international borders, and challenging terrain.

Sensitivity of the Chicken Neck Corridor

The Siliguri Corridor, commonly referred to as the Chicken Neck, connects mainland India to the Northeast. This narrow stretch of land is highly sensitive from a security perspective. In case of any disruption, alternative air access points like the Moran Emergency Landing Facility could prove critical.

Rising Tensions Along the China Border

Along the Line of Actual Control near Arunachal Pradesh, China has been rapidly strengthening infrastructure, including roads and airfields. In this context, enhancing air infrastructure in the Northeast significantly strengthens India’s strategic response capability.

A Lifeline During Natural Disasters

Assam frequently faces severe floods and landslides. In such situations, road connectivity often gets disrupted. The new facility can enable faster deployment of rescue teams, medical aid, and relief materials to remote areas.

Built at a cost of approximately Rs 100 crore, the facility is designed for dual use. It can serve both military and civilian aviation needs during emergencies. India’s first such facility was inaugurated earlier in Barmer. The Moran initiative signals that the Northeast is now firmly positioned at the centre of India’s strategic planning.

A Moment of Pride for the Region

As fighter jets roared over Moran’s skies, locals felt a sense of pride. This is more than just an airstrip. It represents assurance, preparedness, and national commitment to the Northeast. The facility strengthens security, enhances disaster response, and integrates the region more closely with the rest of the country.
