NHAI Simplifies FASTag KYV Process After User Complaints

NHAI

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has simplified the Know Your Vehicle (KYV) process for FASTags. This move has been taken after some sections of the media reported about the challenges faced by users during verification, which seems to be a major relief for vehicle owners across India.

A Simplified, Hassle-Free Experience

FASTag

FASTag services will no longer be abruptly discontinued for users who haven’t completed the KYV process. According to the revised guidelines, instead, they will be given ample time and multiple opportunities to complete the verification process.

One of the most user-friendly changes is that side photographs of vehicles are no longer required. Users now only need to upload a front photo showing the number plate and FASTag. To make the process even smoother, the system will automatically fetch RC details from the VAHAN database once the user enters their vehicle number, chassis number, or registered mobile number.

If a user has multiple vehicles linked to one mobile number, the portal will now allow them to easily select which vehicle they want to complete the KYV for.

NHAI and HMCL step in after the media reports

The revision was announced by HMCL, the wing of NHAI that manages tolling and the FASTag system. Officials said that this decision was made to make the process “simpler and more transparent”, ensuring that genuine users do not face unnecessary trouble.

The government clarified that all FASTags issued before June 20, 2024 (the date of the KYV policy) will remain active unless specific complaints are received about misuse or damaged tags.

Furthermore, the issuer banks will send regular SMS reminders to customers who have not completed their KYV process. While uploading documents, if any user faces technical issues, banks will proactively contact and assist them before any disconnection is made.

Motorists can also contact the National Highway helpline at 1033 to register complaints or seek assistance.

Why This Matters

The NHAI has set another positive example of responsiveness and citizen-focused governance with this timely move. After media reports were published on users struggling to complete KYV and having their FASTags blocked at toll plazas, authorities have acted swiftly to remove unnecessary barriers.

This move means smoother travel, fewer toll gate hassles, besides more trust in the system that powers India’s highway network.
