What Is Muhurat Trading?

Muhurat Trading is a special one-hour session. This is conducted by the Indian stock exchanges every Diwali. The term “Muhurat” signifies an auspicious time that is believed to bring luck and prosperity.

This is the beginning of the new Samvat year in the Hindu calendar. During this auspicious hour,  before placing the first trade, investors, traders, and their families perform worship of the account books, which is called  Chopda Pujan .

This is not just a financial event but an emotional and cultural celebration — a combination of tradition with modern investing. Traders often buy blue-chip or long-term growth stocks, ETFs and such long-term investment instruments during this hour as it is the beginning of a prosperous year ahead.

Brokerage-Free Trading

Most of the leading stockbrokers in India waive off brokerage charges during Muhurat Trading. Investors and traders can buy or sell shares without paying any brokerage fees during this session.

Why the Shift to Afternoon?

Traditionally, Muhurat Trading takes place in the evening, usually between 6 PM and 7 PM. But this year, the session has been moved to the afternoon, from 1:45 PM to 2:45 PM.

According to reports, this is done by exchanges to simplify post-market operations, align with new clearing and settlement systems, and make participation easier for global investors and NRIs in different time zones.

Furthermore, the afternoon timing also allows traders to complete their transactions early and spend the evening celebrating Diwali rituals with family, without disruption.
