The ruling NDA has clinched a landslide victory in the Bihar Assembly Election Results 2025, delivering one of its most decisive mandates in recent times. The emphatic win led to a total collapse of the Mahagathbandhan, which failed to retain support even in its core strongholds.

This three-fourths majority by the NDA in the third most populous state is their best performance since 2010. The verdict marks a major shift in Bihar’s political landscape and underscores the voters’ resounding endorsement of the ruling alliance.

Counting began at 8 am sharp, and from the very first round, the NDA surged ahead on the strength of postal ballots. Early trends indicated that the alliance was confidently crossing the majority mark and even moved beyond 160, a figure that BJP leader and Union Home Minister Amit Shah had earlier predicted with his slogan, “160 Paar.” The ruling NDA ultimately won 202 of the 243 seats, signalling an overwhelming public mandate.

In the meantime, the Mahagathbandhan, led by Tejashwi Yadav’s RJD, found itself struggling to stay afloat with just 35 seats (including the seats won by the India Bloc). Prashant Kishor’s Jan Suraaj Party, considered an X-factor by some, failed even to open its account.

The Battle for “Big Brother” Status

While the NDA as an alliance dominated, a fascinating race unfolded within the alliance. The BJP went ahead with 89 seats, slightly edging out Nitish Kumar’s JD(U), which won 85 seats. This set the stage for a subtle tussle over who would be the coalition’s leading force.

Other NDA allies also posted strong performances with LJP(RV) securing 19 seats, HAM with 5 seats and RLM winning 4 out of 6 contested seats.

The RJD performed most of the heavy lifting for the Mahagathbandhan, winning 25 seats, while the Congress could win only six seats, despite contesting in 61 seats. Smaller allies such as the CPI(M) and CPI(ML)(L) held limited ground, winning 1 and two seats respectively.

Nitish Kumar Set for a Record 10th Oath-Taking

The results have positioned Nitish Kumar for what could be one of the most historic moments in Bihar’s political history — his 10th oath-taking ceremony as Chief Minister. However, the slightly better performance by the BJP could snatch away this rare opportunity.

His development-driven image, often dubbed “Sushasan,” combined with a massive turnout of enthusiastic women voters, appears to have boosted the JD(U)’s performance across several constituencies.

This massive victory is signified as the result of a powerful “Nimo wave” — the combined force of Nitish Kumar and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Nitish’s long-term welfare schemes, especially those benefiting women, and PM Modi’s aggressive campaign added momentum to the NDA push.

This combination delivered strong gains even in regions like Seemanchal, where the BJP made unexpected leaps.

Historic Turnout and Heavy Security Deployment

Bihar witnessed a record-breaking voter turnout of 67.13% during the elections that were held in two phases on November 6 and November 11, which proved to be a testament to the people’s growing faith in democratic participation.

To ensure peace during counting today, an adequate number of CAPF personnel and Bihar Police teams were deployed statewide. 106 companies of security forces from outside Bihar provided additional support.

Counting centers were secured with a two-tier protection system. While the CAPF were deployed in the Inner Layer, and Outer Layer consisted of the Bihar Police. Additionally, 24/7 CCTV surveillance and modern security systems were in place, ensuring a safe and smooth counting environment.
