First Ever Made in India Range Rover Evoque Rolls Out from Ranipet with Pride

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

There was a time when India was seen only as a car market. Today, it is steadily becoming a global manufacturing hub. With the first Range Rover Evoque rolling out of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicle’s plant in Ranipet, that vision has moved a step forward. This is not just the launch of a luxury SUV, but a significant milestone in India’s automotive journey.

Located in Panapakkam, Ranipet, about 90 kilometres west of Chennai, the facility was inaugurated by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin, who also drove the first car inside the factory premises. From now on, the Range Rover Evoque will be manufactured in India, strengthening the Make in India initiative.

In 2008, the Tata Group acquired Jaguar Land Rover for approximately 2.3 billion dollars. At the time, many considered it a risky decision. The global economy was facing a slowdown, and JLR was under financial pressure.

However, history proved it to be a visionary move. Tata not only revived the British brand but also helped it regain strength through advanced technology, refined design and a stronger premium positioning.

Today, brands like Range Rover and Defender proudly dominate the luxury SUV segment in India. This transformation reflects patience, strategy and long-term commitment.

Ranipet Plant, A Story of Investment and Opportunity

Tata Motors has announced an overall investment plan of around Rs 9000 crore for this project. In the initial phase, approximately Rs 900 crore has been invested. The plant is expected to gradually scale up to an annual production capacity of more than 2.5 lakh units.

In the beginning, the target is to manufacture around 20000 Range Rover vehicles annually. Nearly 1300 components are required to build a single vehicle, which means the project will significantly benefit local suppliers and generate employment opportunities.

Until now, Tata carried out its CKD operations in Pune, but over time, a major portion of these operations will shift to Tamil Nadu.

Tata Motors has consistently placed safety at the centre of its strategy. Models like the Nexon earned a 5-star rating in Global NCAP crash tests, setting new benchmarks in India. The Harrier and Safari are also known for their strong body structure and advanced safety features.

This safety focused approach has strengthened customer trust. As JLR models are now being manufactured locally, expectations are high that premium safety technologies will continue to be a key highlight.

Today’s Indian customer does not seek only luxury, but safe luxury. That shift in mindset makes JLR’s renewed push in India even more meaningful.

A Fresh Take Off for the Indian Market

The first Range Rover Evoque from Ranipet represents more than just a vehicle. It symbolizes the confidence Tata has built over the years. This move will further establish Tamil Nadu as a major automotive hub and enhance India’s standing on the global manufacturing map.

Competition in the luxury segment will remain intense, but with strong brand equity, a safety driven philosophy and local production advantages, JLR appears ready for a new phase of growth in India.
