Sometimes global tensions rise suddenly and shake the entire international system. A similar situation is currently unfolding in West Asia. Amid the growing Strait of Hormuz crisis, reports of tanker attacks are raising fears worldwide, but at the same time, there is a piece of relief for India.

According to recent developments, Iran has allowed Indian flagged ships to pass safely through the Strait of Hormuz. This decision comes at a time when tensions have escalated in the region following strikes involving the United States and Israel, causing maritime traffic through this crucial route to slow down significantly.

In this sensitive situation, India responded through active diplomacy. India’s External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar spoke with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi.

The two leaders discussed the rapidly evolving situation in West Asia as well as maritime security and the safe passage of ships. Reports suggest that this was their third conversation since the conflict in the region began. Following this diplomatic engagement, Iran signalled that Indian vessels would be allowed safe passage.

However, Iran has made it clear that any vessel wishing to cross the Strait of Hormuz must first obtain its permission. Attempting to cross without approval could be risky.

Action taken against ships that ignored warnings

The commander of the naval arm of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Alireza Tangsiri, claimed that two ships attempted to cross the strait despite warnings.

According to him, the vessels Express Rome and Mayuree Naree ignored Iran’s caution and tried to pass through the route. As a result, action was taken against them. This incident has further increased concern among international shipping companies.

The Strait of Hormuz is not just another sea route. It is widely considered one of the most critical energy corridors in the world.

Every day through this narrow passage about 20 million barrels of crude oil are transported, a large portion of global oil consumption depends on this route and many countries rely on this corridor for energy supplies.

If shipping through this strait is disrupted, it can quickly affect global oil prices, shipping costs and international supply chains.

Close monitoring of Indian ships and seafarers

The Indian government has stepped up monitoring in response to the situation. Reports indicate that 28 Indian flagged vessels are currently operating in the Persian Gulf region.

Hundreds of Indian seafarers are working on these ships. To ensure their safety, authorities have activated a 24-hour control room within the shipping ministry and the Directorate General of Shipping. Stabilising supply and preventing sharp spikes in oil prices if the crisis disrupts shipping in the region.
