For millions of people investing in the stock market, today marks the beginning of a major change. From April 1, 2026, the new SEBI Algo Trading Norms introduced by the Securities and Exchange Board of India have officially come into effect. If you are involved in algorithmic trading or planning to start, this is extremely important for you.

From today, trading is no longer just about speed or smart strategies. Security, transparency, and accountability have become equally essential.

Algo trading means using computer programs to execute trades automatically. While this method has grown rapidly in popularity, it has also brought risks and cases of fraud. Keeping this in mind, SEBI has introduced new rules to ensure that retail investors remain safe and market trust is maintained.

What Has Changed from April 1

The biggest change is in API trading. Open APIs are no longer allowed. Every user must now access trading systems through secure API keys linked to a fixed IP address. In addition, two-factor authentication is now mandatory for every login. Password expiry and daily auto logout systems have also been enforced.

Every Trade Will Now Be Fully Traceable

It is now mandatory to maintain complete records of every algo trade. This includes time, price, quantity, and order ID. This ensures that any irregularity can be easily detected and investigated.

Brokers Now Have Greater Responsibility

The role of brokers has expanded significantly. They are now required to monitor all algorithm activities and handle investor complaints. If any broker fails to comply with the rules, they will not be allowed to onboard new API users.

New Rules for Algo Providers

Algo providers can no longer operate freely. They must first register with stock exchanges. They are also required to clearly disclose all charges to clients, ensuring there are no hidden costs.

What It Means for Retail Investors

If you develop your own algorithm and place orders at high speed, you will need to register it. Additionally, such algos can only be used by you and your immediate family members.

In recent times, many investors have fallen victim to fake algorithmic services and misleading promises. Several people lost money due to unverified automated trading systems. These new rules aim to reduce such incidents and strengthen investor confidence.

A Relief for Investors

With these norms in place, market transparency will improve, and small investors will feel more secure. It will now be difficult for fraudulent or risky algorithm sellers to exploit investors.
