Google has announced a $15 billion investment to build its largest Artificial Intelligence (AI) hub outside the United States. And the great news for the Indians at this moment is that the very hub will be built in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, India.
This is indeed a groundbreaking move that signifies India’s growing importance in the global technology sector.Marking a defining moment for India’s digital and technological ambitions, Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian announced this at an event on Tuesday.
In his X handle, Kurian announced it,” We’re building on our 15-year investment with South Carolina with a new $9B investment that will expand our @googlecloud data centers, power America’s digital economy, and help our customers continue to innovate with AI.”
A Bold Step towards India’s AI Vision

The new AI hub will definitely expand Google’s data center capacity in southern India. It will enable the company to deliver faster, more sustainable, and more advanced AI and cloud solutions.
Kurian noted that the investment will be spread over the next five years, calling it a “transformative project” that will strengthen India’s position in the global AI ecosystem.
Andhra Pradesh’s Minister for Human Resources Development, Nara Lokesh recently said that the project’s 1-gigawatt capacity was initially valued at $10 billion. He shared on X that the agreement came after “a year of intense discussions and relentless effort,” adding that “this is just the beginning” of a long-term partnership between the state and Google.
India’s Largest AI Infrastructure
Google’s Indian subsidiary, Raiden Infotech, will carry out the investment. It also plans to develop three large campuses across Visakhapatnam. These campuses will function as the foundation for Google’s AI operations in India — driving innovation, data processing, and AI model training at an unprecedented scale.
Reports indicate that Andhra Pradesh officials are preparing to further increase the state’s computing capacity over the next three years, solidifying its reputation as India’s emerging AI powerhouse.
Google and India
Google CEO Sundar Pichai said that he personally discussed the Visakhapatnam project with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, emphasizing how the new hub will drive innovation, generate employment, and strengthen India’s digital economy.
He wrote, “Great to speak with India PM @narendramodi@OfficialINDIAai to share our plans for the first-ever Google AI hub in Visakhapatnam, a landmark development. This hub combines gigawatt-scale compute capacity, a new international subsea gateway, and large-scale energy infrastructure. Through it we will bring our industry-leading technology to enterprises and users in India, accelerating AI innovation and driving growth across the country.”
The Prime Minister is delighted
Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India, has said that he has been delighted by the launch. He wrote, “Delighted by the launch of the Google AI Hub in the dynamic city of Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. This multi-faceted investment that includes gigawatt-scale data centre infrastructure aligns with our vision to build a Viksit Bharat. It will be a powerful force in democratizing technology. It will also ensure AI for All, delivering cutting-edge tools to our citizens, boosting our digital economy and securing India’s place as a global technology leader!”
India’s Next Big Leap
This historic investment by Google signifies much more than an infrastructure project. It denotes trust in India’s talent, potential, and leadership in technology. This AI hub is expected to generate a large number of high-value jobs, boost local research and innovation, and push India to the forefront of global AI advancement.
