Tarique Rahman’s Homecoming After 17 Years Sparks Hope, But Can the Fire of Violence Be Extinguished?

There was a unique stir in the streets of Bangladesh on Thursday (December 25). After staying away from his soil for 17 long years, the scene was worth beholding when Tarique Rahman stepped onto the land of Dhaka. From the airport to the streets, there was a glimmer of hope in the eyes of millions seeing their leader, while many faces also bore deep concern regarding the country’s current conditions.

Tarique’s return is not just a leader coming home; it is a new hope for a Bangladesh that has been struggling with violence, the pain of losing loved ones, and instability over the past few months.

Tarique Rahman appeared emotional seeing the surge of supporters on the streets of Dhaka. He spoke to the people not like a seasoned politician, but like a guardian. Recalling the words of Martin Luther King Jr., he said that he, too, has a “dream” and a “plan” to fulfil that dream.

Rahman made it clear that he wants to build a Bangladesh where people of every religion and every class, whether Hindu, Muslim, or Christian, can sleep peacefully at night and go to work in the morning without any fear. Remembering the martyrs of 1971 and those who lost their lives in the 2024 student movement, he said we must build a country that honours their sacrifice.

The Dark Shadow of Violence: When Humanity Was Shamed

While Tarique Rahman spoke of peace and unity on one side, news coming from some parts of Bangladesh on the other is heart-wrenching. In Rajbari, a Hindu youth named Amrit Mandal was brutally beaten to death. What happened to Dipu Chandra Das just a few days before this has shaken the entire world.

On one hand, there is enthusiasm for building a new country, while on the other, incidents like “mob lynching” are a stain on society. The murder of student leader Sharif Osman Hadi has also planted a fear in people’s minds: will the elections truly be able to take place peacefully?

A New Chapter in Relations with India: Will the Bitterness Fade?

For India, Tarique Rahman’s return is no less than a puzzle. After years of sour relations, a faint ray of hope is now visible. Rahman’s move to distance himself from radical organisations like ‘Jamaat-e-Islami’ and project himself as a democratic face could be a positive sign for New Delhi.

India has always wanted a stable and secure neighbour. If Rahman succeeds in providing security to minorities as per his promise, it will not only improve relations with India but also write a new chapter of peace in all of South Asia.

Bangladesh Standing Between Hope and Challenge

Tarique Rahman’s return has given leadership to the Bangladeshi people, but the challenges are mountain-high. On one hand, he has to stop extremist forces, and on the other, he must put the broken economy and law-and-order back on track.

Can his “plan” truly save the lives of those innocents who are falling victim to mob violence? Can he really build a “Bangladesh of dreams” where no mother lives in fear of her son not returning home? This question is on the lips of every Bangladeshi and neighbouring country today.
