When the news of Zubeen Garg’s death first reached Assam, millions felt a deep void — a pain that words could barely hold. For a state that grew up with his voice, his sudden passing in Singapore felt like losing a part of its soul. But on Tuesday, that grief turned into shock as Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma made a spine-chilling revelation in the Assembly.
CM Sarma: “One Person Killed Him, Others Helped”

During an adjournment motion, the Chief Minister made the most explosive statement yet. According to him, the Assam Police, after its preliminary assessment, concluded that the Zubeen Garg’s death was not an accident, not culpable homicide, but a “plain and simple murder.”
Sarma revealed that one person directly killed Zubeen and the others assisted in the act and therefore, four to five people will be charged with murder. He also confirmed that Section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) — a section dealing with murder — was added just three days after Zubeen’s death, indicating strong early evidence.
Zubeen Garg’s case: 7 Arrests, 252 Witnesses, 29 Seized Items
The investigation has been nothing short of massive. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) under the CID has already arrested seven individuals, examined 252 witnesses and seized 29 critical items connected to the case.
Sarma assured the House that a “watertight chargesheet” will be filed in December — and warned that the motive behind the killing would “shock the people of Assam.”
Zubeen Garg’s Death Probe to Widen After Chargesheet
The Chief Minister said the investigation will not end with murder charges. Once the chargesheet is filed, the probe will expand to explore the angle of negligence, criminal breach of trust, and other potential criminal lapses. This means more layers of the case may open in the coming months.
Assembly Unites to Discuss the Tragic Death
The adjournment motion, moved by Opposition leader Debabrata Saikia and MLA Akhil Gogoi, was accepted after the CM personally urged the Speaker to allow it. Sarma said the government was “equally seized of the matter” and would present only the official response, as Treasury bench members chose not to debate.
Speaker Biswajit Daimary cautioned MLAs to avoid statements that might affect the ongoing investigation.
Separate Commission Extends Deadline for Evidence
Alongside the police probe, a one-man judicial commission led by Justice Soumitra Saikia of the Gauhati High Court is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of Zubeen Garg. The commission has extended its deadline to 12 December for recording statements and collecting evidence. Individuals can still submit notarised affidavits during working hours.
A State Still Mourning Its Music Legend

Zubeen Garg, 52, died while swimming in the sea in Singapore. His 53rd birthday, observed just weeks ago, was marked with emotional tributes across Assam — a reflection of how deeply he is loved and how unbearable this mystery feels for his fans.
Now, as the investigation moves into a crucial phase, Assam waits with a heavy heart — hopeful for answers, but fearful of the truth that may emerge.
